Wáng Chōng 王沖
Fèi Shī appellation Gōngjǔ was Qiánwèi Nán’ān man. In Liú Zhāng’s time he was Miánzhú Magistrate. When Xiānzhǔ [Liú Bèi] attacked Miánzhú, Shī first led the city to surrender. When Chéngdū was settled, Xiānzhǔ took office as Yì Province Governor, and appointed Shī as Commanding Army Attending Official, sent out as Zāngkē Administrator, returned as Province Front Division Major.
When Xiānzhǔ became King of Hànzhōng, he sent Shī to appoint Guān Yǔ as Front General, [Guān] Yǔ heard Huáng Zhōng was Rear General, and [Guān] Yǔ angrily said: “I to the end will not with that old soldier have same rank!” He would not agree to accept appointment.
Shī said to [Guān] Yǔ: “One who establishes a King’s enterprise, those he employs cannot be only one. In the past Xiāo [Hé] and Cáo [Cān] with Gāozǔ [Liú Bāng] when young were close old friends, and Chén [Píng] and Hán [Xìn] fled in exile and later arrived, but in discussing their order of rank, Hán [Xìn] was highest, but one does not hear that Xiāo [Hé] and Cáo [Cān] because of this complained. Now the King of Hàn[zhōng] for one time’s achievement, greatly honors [Huáng Zhōng] Hànshēng, but in his thoughts of lightness and heaviness, how can it with your lordship be equal? Moreover the King with your lordship, are like one body, together sharing in happiness or sorrow, disaster and fortune the same. I humbly for your lordship, think it not appropriate to calculate office title’s high and low, or take rank and salary’s amount as your thinking. I am only an envoy, a man presenting order, if your lordship will not accept appointment, then I will return, and only for you pity this action, and fear you will have regrets and that is all!”
[Guān] Yǔ was greatly moved, and hurriedly accepted the appointment.
Later the various ministers discussed wishing to encourage the King of Hànzhōng to take Imperial Title, Shī sent up memorial saying: “Your highness because Cáo Cāo father and son pressured the ruler and seized the throne, therefore then traveled and campaigned ten thousand lǐ, gathered together soldiers and armies, about to suppress rebels. Now the great enemy is not yet overcome, to first enthrone yourself, one fears the people’s hearts will be doubtful. In the past Gāozǔ [Liú Bāng] with Chǔ had agreement, that the first to capture Qín[‘s capital] would be a King. Reaching the slaughter of [Qín’s capital] Xiányáng, capturing [King of Qín] Zǐyīng, yet he harbored thought of declining, so all the more now when your highness has not yet set out from gate and court, how can you wish to enthrone yourself? I your foolish servant truly do not believe your highness should.” Because of this disobedience to intention, he was demoted to Yǒngchāng Attending Official.
- Xí Zuòchǐ states: A ruler beginning foundation, waits for great settlement and afterward establishes himself, but a ruler continuing succession, must hurriedly establish in order to connect to the masses’ hearts, and therefore when [Jìn] Huì-gōng in the morning was captured his son Yǔ that night was enthroned. Gēngshǐ [Liú Xuán] was still alive but Guāng-Wǔ [Liú Xiù] raised title, how was this forgetting ruler and seeking profit, it was because of the State Altars. Now Xiānzhǔ gathered righteous troops, about to suppress rebels. The rebels were strong and the disaster great, the ruler destroyed and the state mourning, the Temples of the Two Founders [Liú Bāng, Liú Xiù], cut off and not receiving sacrifices, if not one of family relation and worthiness, who could continue this? Succeeding the Founders and matching Heaven, this is not Xiányáng’s example, in continuing succession and suppressing rebels, how can there be thought of declining? At this time, not knowing to hurriedly honor the virtuous to serve great governance, cause the people to be happy and return to the correct, the world to attend to old affairs, lead the obedient to join hearts, cause the rebellious to together far, it can be said to be foolish. this dismissal and demotion was appropriate!
- Your Servant Sōngzhī believes that of [Xí] Zuòchǐ’s discussion and comments, only this discussion is best.
Jiànxīng Third Year, he accompanied Zhūgě Liàng going south, returned reaching Hànyáng county, and surrendered man Lǐ Hóng came to visit [Zhūgě] Liàng, [Zhūgě] Liàng met [Lǐ] Hóng, and at the time Jiǎng Wǎn with Shī were in attendance. [Lǐ] Hóng said: “Recently I passed Mèng Dá, and happened to meet Wáng Chōng from the south come, and say in the past at [Mèng] Dá’s defection, your enlightened excellency gnashed teeth [in anger], wishing to punish [Mèng] Dá’s wives and children, but Xiānzhǔ did not listen and that is all. [Mèng] Dá said: ‘Zhūgě Liàng understands and considers the beginnings to ends, and to the end is not like that.’ He earnestly did not believe [Wáng] Chōng’s words. and trusts and admires your enlightened excellency, it is only that he has no way to return.”
[Zhūgě] Liàng said to [Jiǎng] Wǎn and Shī: “Return to the capital to write letter to with [Mèng Dá] Zǐdù exchange news.
Shī advanced and said: “Mèng Dá this petty man, in the past serving Shaking Authority [General Liú Zhāng] was not loyal, and later again betrayed Xiānzhǔ [Liú Bèi], this back and forth man, how is he sufficient to write letter with?” [Zhūgě] Liàng was silent and did not answer.
[Zhūgě] Liàng wished to entice [Mèng] Dá to be external help, and indeed with [Mèng] Dá wrote letter: “In previous years on southern campaign, at the year’s end I returned, and happened to with Lǐ Hóng meet at Hànyáng, and so came to know of news, and your perpetual sighs, to store your ordinary will, how is it that of one of empty trust in name and glory, to for nobility depart? Alas Méng sir, this truly was due to Liú Fēng offending you, and so harming Xiānzhǔ’s righteousness of treating scholars. Also [Lǐ] Hóng says Wáng Chōng made false reports, but said you understood my heart, and did not accept [Wáng] Chōng’s persuasions. Seeking your clear words, I seek our old life’s friendship, regretfully look east, and therefore have this letter.”
[Mèng] Dá obtained [Zhūgě] Liàng’s letter, and repeatedly exchanged communication, saying he wished to rebel against Wèi. Wèi sent Sīmǎ [Yì] Xuān-wáng to campaign against him, and beheaded and exterminated [Mèng] Dá. [Zhūgě] Liàng also because [Mèng] Dá had no sincere heart, therefore did not rescue him.
When Jiǎng Wǎn maintained the government, he appointed Shī as Remonstrance Grandee. He died at home.
Wáng Chōng was a Guǎnghàn man. He became Ivory Gate General, subordinate to Jiāngzhōu Commander Lǐ Yán. He was by [Lǐ] Yán hated, and in fear of punishment surrendered to Wèi. Wèi appointed Chōng as Lèlíng Administrator. (1)
- (1) Sūn Shèng’s Shǔ Shìpǔ states: Shī’s son [Fèi] Lì, was a Jìn Cavalier Regular Attendant. From this afterward of Yì Province’s various Fèi with reputation and rank, most were Shī’s descendants.
